The Prime Minister of Thailand, Thaksin Shinawatra, was ousted from power in April, despite winning a snap election boycotted by the opposition parties. Weeks of massive street protests, that saw tens of thousands of normally reserved Thais marching around the country and on the streets of the capital Bangkok, finally took their toll on the embattled leader. Thaksin, a multi-millionaire former telecoms tycoon accused by his opponents of abuse of power and corruption, resigned in the face of a growing political crisis. The power of the people had triumphed.
