As Afghanistan prepared for its second presidential election, candidates hit the campaign trail in preparation for the vote on Aug. 20. Not long ago, pundits expected current President Hamid Karzai to effortlessly win re-election. Karzai and top contender Dr. Abdullah Abdullah both have approximately 40 percent of the nationwide vote for president with ten percent of the polling centers counted. Whatever happens, when the preliminary results are revealed, if Karzai is victorious it could lead to widespread violence which some fear will be akin to Iran's post-election experience.
