Want a suit or dress from one of the world's most famous tailors? Hop a plane to Hong Kong and visit Sam. Located in one of the most nondescript locations in Kowloon, Sam, the son of an Indian immigrant, is really Manu Melwani. For 47 years, he and his family have been making suits for likes of David Bowie, Prince Charles, Luciano Pavarotti, Michael Palin and all the U.S. presidents since Richard Nixon. The rich and famous adorn the walls in photographs throughout the shop, and it's not just for ego, it's but a small example of celebrity status bestowed to Sam. For a mere $30 USD, one can have a tailored dress shirt made in a day, or a dress or a suit for a bit more. While waiting for your suit to be made during a brief weekend stay, go out and live it up. Stay at the nearby 5-star hotel, the Peninsula. Take the famous Star Ferry across Victoria Harbour and dine at Yun Kee Restaurant for some of the best Chinese food in the former British colony. Afterwards, head up by escalator to the Soho district for a drink. Later, hop down to Lan Kwai Fong to party till the early morning hours. The next day, go back to Sam's for a second fitting. Take in high tea at the Peninsula, then return in the afternoon to pick up your one-of-a-kind Sam's Tailor suit, all in 24 hours.
