CONGO:
FORGOTTEN WAR
The death toll from the conflict in the Democratic Republic
of Congo (DRC) is the highest ever attributed to war
in Africa or indeed, anywhere in the world since World War II.
At least 3 to 4.7 million deaths have occurred in the past five
years. And aid agencies say that war-related hunger and disease
continues to kill 1,000 people every day. From May to August
2005, VII photographers visited the DRC with the full support
of Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF). Ron Haviv, Gary Knight, Antonin
Kratochvil, Joachim Ladefoged and James Nachtwey photographed
the devastating impact on human life after decades of war, genocide,
disease and hunger.
