VII MASTERCLASS WORKSHOPS
VII Masterclass Workshop series is designed to give professional photographers and committed amateur photographers opportunities to work and study with some of the most forward thinking, enterprising, and talented working photojournalists today. The VII workshops are intense and intimate affairs, providing students with complete access to the VII photographers and the ability to take advantage of their work experience, teachings, methodologies and contacts. The primary focus of the VII Masterclass Workshop series is to help strengthen personal vision, authorship, and story telling. VII has hosted workshops throughout the world in Israel, France, Cambodia, and the United States.

The VII Masterclass Workshops are for photographers who are seeking to advance their work, redirect their focus or take their storytelling to another level. All applicants must have an understanding of the technical aspects of digital photography, including editing software. The VII Workshops do not provide cameras or laptop computers. Students are expected to come prepared as if they were shooting a real assignment.

VII PHOTO AGENCY
VII Photo Agency is an international photographic cooperative with offices located in New York, Paris, and Los Angeles. This collective of award-winning photojournalists was founded in Perpignan, France on September 9 2001 by Alexandra Boulat, Ron Haviv, Gary Knight, Antonin Kratochvil, Christopher Morris, James Nachtwey, and John Stanmeyer. The original seven founding members were joined by Lauren Greenfield in 2002, Joachim Ladefoged in 2004, Eugene Richards in 2006, and in 2007 by Marcus Bleasdale and Franco Pagetti.

While the stark realities of the battlefield loom large, VII turns its gaze with equal intensity to more subtle forms of conflict and to documenting the changes and development of society and cultures worldwide. Each photographer is inspired by an array of often very different motivations, and it is from this breadth of reference that the agency draws its originality and strength. What unites VII ’s work is a sense that, in the act of communication at the very least, all is not lost – the seeds of hope and resolution inform even the darkest records of inhumanity; reparation is always possible; despair is never absolute.

VII has developed the VII Seminars and VII Masterclass Workshops as educational events for students and professional photographers. In January 2008, VII opened a new retail space in the D.U.M.B.O district of NYC, dedicated to photojournalism and the work of the VII photographers. Visitors to VII D.U.M.B.O will be able to buy VII Photographer art prints and photo books, as well as attend lectures, workshops and book signings. In 2005 American Photo Magazine named VII the third most important entity in photography.
MARCUS BLEASDALE
Learn integral elements for creating moving,
poetic imagery.

What are the principal components a photojournalist needs to be gathering when shooting an essay? How does one make that essay as poetic as possible given the material and time constraints at hand? Marcus Bleasdale’s workshop principally consists of trying to answer these questions while unraveling the photo essay. Photographers concentrate on maximizing the use of light, movement and the frame in order to achieve the goal of an exceptional essay. Marcus also discusses the practicalities of working and covering stories in difficult to access regions. Students must be motivated to work extremely hard. They should bring their laptop and must have a good command of Photoshop skills.

Marcus Bleasdale has spent seven years covering the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. His work was published in his book One Hundred Years of Darkness. His second book on the Democratic Republic of Congo, 4.000.000, is due out in 2008 He has received numerous awards including the 2007 Photographer of the Year Award. In 2007 he was awarded a grant with Human Rights Watch to continue his work on justice and accountability in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Marcus is represented by VII Photo Agency and continues to cover conflicts underreported and forgotten by today’s media.
